The Beginning

W

It all started with the question we kept asking ourselves as our children grew up in a Western setting:

"Why is it so difficult to find good children's books that reflect our Islamic identity? "

Don't get me wrong, there is no shortage of children's books that are based around something Islamic. It's the good part that is missing. Children, as we all know, love picture books and they love books that has an interesting story told in simple language or rhymes. Books like the Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson or Where the wild things are by Maurice Sendak are magical books that keep our children captivated. They fill them will imagination and wonder. Yet, as we read them to our children, we felt this absence of our own identity and culture in them. We've always wanted books that would be equally good in writing, in imagination and in illustration but books that would also include our values as a Muslim family. We wanted books about the beautiful stories of our Prophet, or about those stories about our religious leaders that inspired us when we heard them from our grandmothers. And we wanted those books to be just as captivating as those classics by writers like Roald Dahl, Julia Donaldson and many others like them.

That was the beginning of this journey. On the way we realized that times have moved on and we should add elements of interactivity that smart devices and computers offer in the mix. To captivate those ever fidgety fingers of our young ones we need to augment paper form books with digital ones that animate, shake and sparkle! And given the technical background we had in our team it was an easy jump to mobile apps that has "gamification" built on top of those well written, well illustrated stories from Islamic world we were planning to publish.

Thus we arrived at Hakma.

And we promise you that this just the beginning. We plan to change this world and give our loved ones books and experiences to cherish.
